The Next Generation of NFL Play Callers Is Here

There isn’t a more transient coaching position in the NFL right now than a play calling offensive coordinator. OCs who show any promise in their first year on the job get poached for head coaching positions, and those who don’t are immediately run out of town and replaced by other young coaching prospects. Consider this: As we enter the 2026 season, there are only two play calling offensive coordinators who held the same position in 2025—New England’s Josh McDaniels (who’s essentially unhirable as a head coach after his stint in Las Vegas) and Houston’s Nick Caley (who won’t be getting to a third year if the Texans offense plays as poorly it did in his first).
