An elite sport climber died Aug. 3 while attempting a new route in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Jake Whisenant, 30, joins a long list of climbers who have died or disappeared . Anyone looking at that headline asks why someone in his right mind would dedicate years to advancing in a sport that could kill him tomorrow. As an amateur rock climber, I understand why.
