In April, the writer Helen DeWitt sparked an internet furor by turning down the $175,000 Windham-Campbell Literature Prize. Dewitt explained on X that she felt unable to meet the requirements for the prize, which involved promoting the prize by participating in a festival, a podcast, and a promotional video.
To many of us, it seems mind-boggling to turn down that much money because of these requirements.
