In 12th-century Italy, physicians at a medical school in Salerno described the symptoms of plethora, or an excess of blood in the balance of the body’s fluids: “Plethora’s face is of a florid shade, Her eyeballs large and very glaring made; While cheeks and form with mass are overlaid.”
