Is it possible to be a country writer, the same way one can be a country singer? No; we do not use this terminology. We say “agrarian writer” instead. Perhaps we ought not to. “Agrarian writer” has a hint of superiority to it, an air of sanctimony and reserve. “Agrarian writer, Wendell Berry.” Perhaps we ought to talk of “country star Wendell Berry.” Perhaps we ought to talk of “agrarian singer, Morgan Wallen.”
