As a child I got freaked out thinking of eternity at night. Sleepless in bed, watching shadows play across the underside of the top bunk where my older brother dreamed, in that rented house which my religious parents made seem an anteroom of the beyond, I tried with my tired young mind to extend my consciousness into the kingdom of heaven—to see souls singing hosannas forever and ever, amen, before the awesome throne of God. To see myself as one of the ageless elect living a day without end. No sunset or solar darkening for that blessed blaze; every one of us inhabiting a stained-glass body and robed in a buttery golden aureole. Sanctified, complete.
