The Case Against the Liberal Arts

I recently read in The Chronicle of Higher Education that I am “so bad” at defending “the humanities.” (I was trying to defend the liberal arts, which is much broader than the humanities). Perhaps the charge is true, but it all depends on how we understand the measure. What makes a case for the humanities and liberal education good, exactly? Is it popularity with students? (I’ve got an excellent track record there). Is it in raising money for it? (I’m doing more than fine there as well). Is it persuading my fellow academics and higher education administrators? On that front, I will confess, my track record is far sketchier.
