When the University of Chicago submitted its final bid to host Barack Obama’s presidential library, the institution followed the storied American path of buying on credit. Of the eleven sites proposed in Hawaii, New York, and Chicago, only the three put forth by the U of C bore the proviso, “University will work to acquire from City.”
