Isaac Brock Is Still Trying to Grow Up

In February, Isaac Brock finally learned to play “Float On.”

If you are a fan of Modest Mouse, the band that Brock has led for the last three decades and of which he is now the sole original member, that first sentence might have made you chuckle. Perhaps no one in indie rock has ever been so good at building his own myth as Brock: how his mom left his dad for his uncle, how he was raised around assorted cults and communes, how he recorded his landmark album with his sucker-punched jaw wired shut, how he once carved a 12-inch gash into his chest onstage in South Dakota, how he once hired Johnny Marr as a guitarist and Big Boi as a producer. As with all of that, the “Float On” story is mostly true, too.
