On holiday in 2009, the Colombian pop star was traipsing the grounds of her 12-acre luxury farmhouse in Uruguay, when she found herself “automatically” singing the first verse and chorus of an infectious Afropop melody. Only two hours away from the hallowed pitch of the inaugural World Cup, Shakira was certain she had an anthem that could unite the world: “It was like someone was dictating it from above.”
