A Concert at La Scala

If you’re in an opera orchestra, it’s natural to want to get out of the pit and play a concert now and then—a concert of symphonic music. Back home in New York, the Met players do this. And so do the players at La Scala, the opera house here in Milan.

When they play a concert, they are known as the “Filarmonica della Scala.”

Let me note a difference between the Met players and the Scala players. When the former group plays a concert, they go to Carnegie Hall, rather than playing in their opera house. The Scala players stay in their house.
