Singing Is Not Songwriting

The problem with the New York Times’s “30 Greatest Living American Songwriters” list isn’t a matter of taste. The problem is that the article doesn’t actually rank people who excel at the craft of writing songs. It focuses on performances and performers. Knowing the difference between songwriting and presentation is table stakes in the music industry, yet the distinction appears unknown to the music critics at the New York Times.
