My father dropped out of Harvard during the Cold War. He had planned to sail around the world in search of himself. Instead, he joined the army to avoid being drafted. Lucky for me. The ship he was supposed to be on sank in a storm, harrowingly depicted in the Hollywood movie White Squall.
