Recommending Ross Barkan’s new book Colossus gets tricky because a lot of its strength is tied up in secrets (about the narrator) that’re doled out with a sort of torturously disciplined pacing even as the stakes get higher and the narrative moves faster — so I’ll set the stage with some context and we can drive this home:
Ross Barkan’s new novel Colossus is a slow-burn at first. I read it on Kindle. It took about a week to reach the 25% mark.
Then one day to reach the 50% mark.
I read the second half a day later.
