In the last 10 years, the Extremely Online among us have reappropriated virtually all cartoon IP into memes. The aesthetics range from grotesque edgelordism to saccharine sentimentality. Old newspaper and TV cartoons make for ubiquitous meme fodder because they’re universally intelligible in a post-monoculture world, have vast back catalogs of visuals to match any topic, and are inherently funny (or, barring that, provocative) when juxtaposed with completely unrelated cultural detritus.
