A Whole Civilization

“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.” President Trump’s Truth Social post about Iran has elicited the usual range of reactions as commentators debate whether he was actually calling for genocide (highly unlikely) or rather engaging in a negotiating tactic whose success, as of this writing, remains to be seen. In any case, I believe we should pause to ask what the “whole civilization” is.
