I was between lives when Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers was released in 2012. I saw it at the Regal Cinema on Linton Boulevard. That theater is now an LA Fitness, but when I still lived in Delray Beach at my parents’ condo, it was where I went weekly to see movies alone. Spring Breakers is a neon-soaked fantasy where four bored college girls rob a diner to fund their spring break trip to St. Petersburg, Florida, aka St. Pete. Their partying spirals into drugs, crime, and violence after they fall in with a flashy yet dangerous rapper named Alien. The fantasy curdles into a warped, disturbing look at youth, excess, and the American dream gone feral.
