Let it be clear from the outset: I don’t think Matt Walsh is smart. Not for a public intellectual, and even among podcaster guys and other internet rabble rousers, he’s fairly middle of the pack. But if you’ve observed the evolution of public commentary and its marriage of convenience/suicide pact with social media over the past twenty years, you will recognize that intelligence and its corollaries––humility, openness to error, a preference for the subtle and considered over the intuitive generalization––really can’t get a good foothold anymore.
