A quick note on how I chopped and packed this sausage: I could not for the life of me figure out how to write about this book. I started with comparisons to other books and myths, then theological analyses—then realized I’d barked up a tree I think is real perty but which doesn’t really get to the center of what I want y’all to see about Justin Lee’s A Prisoner’s Cinema. So then I wrote exactly what I felt about it as a final section—then moved that section to the front, since it’s the most crucial. So this Section 0 will read like a conclusion, like it’s responding to Sections 1, 2, and 3; I’d like to let that stand, so as to preserve the essay’s history. There’s something in that that y’all might find valuable, some artifact of the way Lee’s writing sent my brain in loops and tangles.
