“Of all passions,” writes Robert Burton in The Anatomy of Melancholy, “love is most violent, and of those bitter potions which this love-melancholy affords, this bastard jealousy is the greatest.” Love that becomes poisoned with jealousy and suspicion can make men and women do strange things. They can become so obsessed by their passions that they lose their grip on reality and destroy themselves and others.
