In his own day and age, Robert Nisbet (1913–96) was an immensely respected public intellectual, equivalent to C. Wright Mills or Milton Friedman. He appeared everywhere—on campuses speaking, on bookshelves, and on the pages of the Wall Street Journal and Commentary.
