Joel Edgerton on Facing His “Greatest Fear” in Train Dreams

This interview was conducted several weeks before the tragic events in Sydney this past Sunday.

From the opening scenes of Train Dreams, it’s clear that Joel Edgerton is an inspired choice to play Robert Grainier, and Grainier is an inspired part for Edgerton to choose. The protagonist of Denis Johnson’s award-winning novella of the same name is a quiet, watchful logger toiling away in the American Northwest in the early 20th century. Throughout his life the world shifts around him. He finds happiness. Grief finds him. And as the credits roll, we realize we’ve learned, through Edgerton’s eyes, a little more about what it means to be human.
