Introduction
On the train from New York to New Mexico, Mabel Dodge felt stuffy, claustrophobic, she writes in her memoirs. Exiting the train with her luggage in a small town in eastern N.M., eager to breathe the dry, December air, she orders a taxi to journey the rest of the way to Santa Fe. As she and the young boy driver set out, she begins to notice the automobile is run-down and without headlights. The rural canyon road is dark.
