At Last, College Football in the Rio Grande Valley

After I moved to Texas in June, I was told by friends, family, and my Texas Monthly colleagues that one of my first orders of business should be to explore as much of my new terrain as possible. Taking that advice has given me a quick education on this state and has resulted in a series of firsts: my first time merging onto Interstate 10, my first time seeing a tumbleweed, my first time observing line dancers, and my first time ordering a Lone Star. For Texas natives, these points of introduction probably seem clichéd. But put yourself in my shoes: Prior to becoming a transplant, I’d hardly spent any time farther west in the U.S. than Virginia.
