America is broken. A civil war has shattered the national spirit, and the people are impoverished. The country is in a state of industrial and economic decline. An authoritarian military regime hosts an annual competition amidst the collapse to instill patriotism and a work ethic in the populace: Fifty young men walk continuously until one person remains, with the sole requirement that each participant maintain a steady pace of three miles per hour. The last remaining walker receives an enormous sum of money and is granted a single wish of any nature. But there’s a catch: Those who fall behind are executed on the spot.
