After long delays, the person we have waited for stands up there, elevated above everyone else. From moment to moment, the speaker’s face is solemn, mocking, knowing, scornful, radiant. The audience members—and there must always be an audience—lean forward toward the person addressing them, and from their expectant expressions, you can tell they’re transfixed by the words that are somehow running parallel alongside the charismatic figure’s physical presence. You had questions? Here at last are the answers, but the words—this is strange—are less important than the presence.
