This whole idea of a “Great American Novel” strikes me as a little silly.
The Great American Novel is supposed to ask what America is and provide an answer, right? Seeing as how nobody can agree on which book is actually the Great American Novel, one can assume they’ve all done a piss-poor job. A lot of people say it’s Gatsby. I like Gatsby, but I’m from Texas. What the fuck is Long Island supposed to “mean” to me? Is that supposed to be the sum total of America?
