Eight years after the end of Girls, Lena Dunham has finally returned to her small screen roots. In the semi-autobiographical romantic comedy Too Much, Jessica (Megan Stalter) moves from New York to London for a fresh start after a devastating breakup with her longtime boyfriend. Halfway through the series’ first episode, Jessica goes to a pub alone on her first night in London, planning to “let life have its way with me.” There, at the open mic, is Felix (Will Sharpe) who Dunham introduces in glowing slo-mo while he sings an emo song, his hair flopping into his face as Jessica takes him in. Knowing Dunham’s work, it’s clearly a setup—but a beautiful one, as Dunham spends the rest of the series exploring the red flags of Jessica and Felix’s burgeoning relationship.
