As we settled into this interview over Zoom—Catherine Lacey in Mexico City, and me in Sedona, Arizona—Catherine told me about a performance she saw the night prior. An artist had been in a room, blowing up a balloon for a long period of time. From what Catherine told me, the tension of the performance seemed to rely on the idea that this balloon would eventually pop and perhaps explode in some way by the end of the night.
