Red Pill, Blue Pill

§1. Like so much of what we contend with in everyday life, professional decorum is a mixed blessing. Political theory, like every other academic discipline, cannot proceed without the decorum of shared suppositions. And no academic discipline can sustain itself unless from time to time its practitioners raise awkward first-order questions about what they are doing and why. Both activities are necessary; attending to both simultaneously is difficult.
