The meme has become the dominant species of information in the 2024 media environment. It has long displaced the news story. Curated news, struggling for its life since at least 2016, really seems to have lost the battle for our attention. Stories, in every sense of the word, appear spontaneously. The information ecosystem has now been re-wilded: memes, like mushrooms or weeds, spontaneously appear in the fields sown and sprayed by legacy media.
