Pete Rose, Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader, died at 83 Monday, roughly 35 years and a month after he signed a letter agreeing to a permanent ban from the sport. The three-time World Series champion, most valuable player of the 1975 Series, 17-time All-Star and 1973 National League MVP regularly bet on baseball while he was both a player and a manager. The ban was adequate punishment, if not excessive.
