When I first moved onto Council Bluff in 2005, I didn’t quite realize my new home’s proximity to some of Missoula’s most interesting foundational lore. At the time, I was simply trying to get out of the city limits and into a more rural setting, and landed by pure dumb luck on an available house right above a tract of public land where I was heading almost daily anyway, to exercise a young bird dog I had.
I did know that the main route to said land, Mullan Road, was a remnant of the old Mullan Military Road from the late 1850’s, connecting Fort Benton, on the Missouri River, to the US Army outpost in Walla Walla, Washington.
