We Have Reached Peak “Therapy TV”

At the turn of the millennium, going to therapy was a novel enough conceit for a TV show—as long as the patient was a gruff, introspection-averse sort of dude—that it could serve as the main hook for a singularly ambitious drama that encompassed six seasons and dozens of characters. It’s been nearly a quarter century since Tony Soprano wondered aloud, at Dr. Jennifer Melfi’s prodding, what his panic attacks had to do with the ducks in his swimming pool, in the first episode of “The Sopranos.”
