If he had written only histories, he ought to be known as a great historian. If he had written only biographies, he ought to be known as a great biographer. If he had written only essays and columns — you get the picture.
His bibliography tells me that he wrote two novels, in 1959 and 1964. I can’t imagine they are bad.
