‘Amsterdam’ Review: High Society Shuffle

“Amsterdam” arrives with a lot of promise: It has an Oscar-nominated director (David O. Russell), an Oscar-winning star (Christian Bale), two of today’s most sought-after actresses and a couple of other Oscar winners in supporting roles. Yet it comes across as haphazard and indulgent. Not till its second half could I even guess what sort of movie it is trying to be: A Hitchcockian caper, perhaps? Opinions will vary.
