It would be easy to mistake Vladimir Sorokin for a polemical novelist. Born on the outskirts of Moscow in 1955, he came of age as a novelist through the three great transitions of recent Russian history: the end of the USSR, the free-market chaos of the 1990s, and the return to neo-Soviet authoritarianism under Vladimir Putin.
