The Costs of Partisanship

It’s not quite right to say that these men lost their lives for no reason. There was a reason. They died because, despite the towering presence of Abraham Lincoln, the political leadership in this country, North and South, was paralyzed by hyper-partisanship, zealotry, and personal pettiness.
