he Exorcist is the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. As a tenth grader, I remember swallowing hard and white-knuckling the arms of my recliner as I watched Linda Blair’s chilling portrayal of Regan MacNeil, the young girl whose body was invaded by a demon, Pazuzu. Most who have seen the movie can vividly remember its most vile, abhorrent moments. To me, especially at the time, the film depicted sheer evil in a way that I could not have conjured up in my own imagination. What made it scarier for me than any other horror film was that, as a person of faith who felt aware of the spiritual realm of reality, what unfolded in the film seemed so unmistakably plausible, and therefore all the more terrifying.
