In Defense of the 'Batfleck'

When Ben Affleck was announced as the new Batman last week, reactions ranged from the indignant (the Onion) to the outraged (Ben Domenech) to the droll (Richard Dreyfuss). The general sense from the fanboy archipelago was that this signing—which, if scattered reports are true, may contractually run for 13 films—is the worst comic book movie casting since 2004’s execrable Catwoman, featuring a mismatched Halle Berry. Or possibly since the ill-fated 2003 Daredevil. Which, by total coincidence, miscast a young actor named Ben Affleck in the title role.
