An Arch Take on St. Louis

On the morning of Oct. 28, 1965, a ceremony was held in St. Louis that was attended by a handful of government officials, construction executives and a few others. The gathering was limited by necessity: It was being held 630 feet up in the air, on the 17-foot-wide space atop the Gateway Arch. The attendees stood beside the gap where the last triangular stainless-steel-plated section would be wedged into place.
