One Hundred Seconds of Solitude

Recently, I found myself in a cabin in the snow-­dusted New Hampshire woods of the MacDowell Colony working on a book that’s due in few enough months to cause concern. It was a four-week residency, and wildly productive: without social distractions, the Internet or even decent cellphone reception, I churned out pages in record time, hitting and then exceeding my regular word count on a daily basis.
