John Steinbeck was a constant champion of the downtrodden — and not just for the Dust Bowl refugees in “The Grapes of Wrath.” During the 1950s he took up the cause of a politician who was only slightly less of an underdog than the Joads: Adlai Stevenson, the Illinois egghead whose presidential bids have become synonymous with futility.
