How An Author Shouldn't Be

There's a line from How Should a Person Be? that has been quoted in most of the reviews so far: "How should a person be? I sometimes wonder about it, and I can’t help answering like this: a celebrity." It comes at the beginning, and it sets up this performative quality to the rest of the book. Because at no point does she say what she would like to be a celebrity for, and the way she addresses the reader, in this earnestly casual way, it best reminds one of a reality show participant. Not one of the reality shows where you have to have skill or talent. One where you just have to live in a house and go into the "confessional" to spill your secrets.
