When George Plimpton interviewed Ernest Hemingway for The Paris Review in 1958, he asked the author how much he rewrites his work.
“It depends,” Hemingway responded. “I rewrote the ending to [A] Farewell to Arms, the last page of it, 39 times before I was satisfied.”
