One of the overlooked aims of Jonah Goldberg’s bestselling Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the Left From Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning was to defang, to a degree, the word “fascism.” Not to defend it, but to identify it as a body of ideas that, however noxious, did not necessarily entail mass murder.
