First scientists created “Partials,” semi-human supermen to be used as soldiers. Then the Partials rebelled against their creators, Battlestar Galactica style. As they fought, a weaponized virus called RM wiped out most of humanity, and the virus continues to kill newborn infants within days. Eleven years later, a small, struggling settlement of survivors on Long Island is trying to understand and cure RM by focusing on solving the 100-percent infant-mortality rate—which means legislating that women become pregnant at 18 and produce as many babies as physically possible, in hopes that someone will be born immune, or that ongoing testing will bear results.
