It's Hard Out There for a Sherpa

In the summer of 2008 more than 70 climbers in expeditions from around the world spent weeks trekking in the Himalayas to the K2 base camp in Pakistan. The peak, with an elevation of 28,251 feet, is the second-tallest mountain in the world but much harder to climb than Everest, its taller and more famous cousin. By August, 29 climbers had reached the mountain's high camp at 26,000 feet, where they waited for a weather window that would allow them to race to the summit.
