Maps are supposed to clarify, but the map of East Prussia at the start of Max Egremont’s “Forgotten Land: Journeys Among the Ghosts of East Prussia” is a muddling haze, with place names in German, Russian, Polish and Lithuanian and boundary lines that resemble a palimpsest.
