In the past few weeks, I have been asked regularly what lessons we learned from the experience of September 11, and I have despaired of finding much new to say about the terrorist themes because Iâ??ve lived with these issues for so long. I was teaching courses and seminars on terrorism back in the mid-1980s, and in my last offering â?? in 1996 â??our major class project was to assess the likely political and social implications of bringing down the World Trade Center.
